A Most Unlikely Pair

This is a love story. A love story between an old, toothless, rescued

Dachshund and a precious 3-year-old.

Teddy came to us in the summer of 2020. He was found and then treated by a local veterinarian, who reached out for a foster. The old guy wasn't very mobile, didn't have a tooth in his head, had a weak bladder, and had a broken jaw. He was quickly adopted by his foster family and they soon discovered that Teddy's story wasn't over. He was adored by his foster mom and also lucky enough to be loved by the sweetest little girl.

Theirs was a long-distance relationship, Teddy's admirer lived a couple of hours away. He first met her when she was less than a year old and they were besties from the start. Without teeth and being slow-moving, the two became snuggle buddies. Teddy taught her how to respect dogs and respect their space, with help from the adults. Distance did not keep these two apart. For nearly three years, they were able to video chat at least weekly. If Teddy was sleeping with one of the numerous toys she gifted him, she would loudly say "wake up Teddy!!," and he did.

In-person visits consisted of snuggling and dancing together, lots of kisses, and making sure Teddy went outside to potty. As she grew older she was actually able to carry him on her own and hold him for their dances.

On her last visit with Teddy, when she was barely in the door she said, "just give me the dog." Little did we know that Christmas 2022 would be their last in-person visit. Teddy passed away due to complications from Cushing's Disease, in January 2023.

We are so thankful for the lessons we learned from Teddy and his girl - the importance of senior rescue, and the giving and receiving of unconditional love.

A real-life love story of a most unlikely pair.
