Left Behind

For the 16 years I have been involved as a volunteer with my local animal shelter, people have surrendered countless animals to the shelter. So many of these surrenders are due to the owner passing away or their owner’s medical issues leaving them unable to care for them.

As a pet owner, do you have a plan? If you are unable to care for your pets, what will happen?

Eight months ago, both of my parents experienced major health issues, which put them in this situation. They did not have a plan. My sobbing mom, while in the hospital told me their two dogs would need to be euthanized. Now, these dogs are elderly too, but my husband and I swooped in and took Callie and Lilly to our home to live the rest of their lives and care for them. Sadly, Lilly had major health issues and passed after a few months, but Callie is still living a full life and is very comfortable. My parents get to see her whenever they want and get updates and pictures daily. There was no plan, but in this case, things worked out.

A more recent incident happened with a dog that was a former foster in my home. His beloved owner of seven years passed away. During the owner’s terminal illness this faithful dog stayed by her side on the sofa, they had an extraordinarily strong bond. After her passing, a neighbor took the dog to his home and then ultimately took the dog to the shelter. It is a regular occurrence, animals go from a cozy spot, snuggling with their human, to homeless.

We all need a plan, who will care for your pet(s) when you cannot? Include your pets in your will or estate planning. Do you have a trusted friend that is cat friendly, dog friendly, snake friendly? It is very thought provoking and I for one am planning. I will always have a pet(s), but will also do my best to insure they are not left behind without someone to care for them.

I am lucky to have children that love animals as much as I do, so I know mine will be taken care of. But sadly as you say most are not. Thank you for getting this message out, i hope is does make a difference for the future of our loyal pets.
